HULU SELANGOR, 25 July 2026 – What began as a service-learning initiative to tackle period poverty has grown into an award-winning movement transforming the lives of underserved women in Malaysia.
Taylor's Residence today concluded LaunchPad in Kampung Serendah Selangor, bringing together student residents, community leaders, government agencies and non-governmental organisations to empower 242 Orang Asli women through menstrual health and sex education, women's health awareness and sustainable menstrual solutions.
Organised in collaboration with Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA), the Federation of Reproductive Health Associations Malaysia (FRHAM) and the Kampung Serendah community, this year's programme saw 85 Taylor's Residence student volunteers working hand-in-hand with Orang Asli women to produce 2,000 reusable sanitary pads, which will be distributed back to the community. The programme also featured menstrual health and sex education sessions, reusable pad-making workshops using upcycled materials and women's health screening to improve menstrual hygiene awareness, promote preventive healthcare and reduce the stigma surrounding menstruation.
LaunchPad was established by Taylor's Residence in 2019 as its flagship service-learning initiative, founded on the belief that meaningful education extends beyond the classroom. By partnering with NGOs, community organisations and underserved communities, the programme provides students with real-world opportunities to develop empathy, leadership and a strong sense of social responsibility while creating meaningful impact where it is needed most.
Following years of supporting refugee communities, LaunchPad expanded in 2025 to serve Malaysia's indigenous Orang Asli communities, broadening its mission to ensure that more underserved women have access to menstrual health and sex education, dignity and sustainable menstrual solutions.
Over the past seven years, LaunchPad has grown into one of Taylor's Residence's signature service-learning initiatives. To date, it has collaborated with 21 NGOs and community-based organisations, positively impacted more than 1,590 refugees and underserved community members, empowered 422 Taylor's students and residents, and produced and donated 5,300 reusable sanitary pads.
"Period poverty is about far more than access to sanitary products. It affects dignity, health, education and opportunity," said Elaine Yap, Senior Vice President of Taylor's Residence.
"LaunchPad demonstrates how young people can become powerful agents of change when they are given the opportunity to serve. Every community we work with teaches our students that leadership begins with empathy, and that small, consistent actions can create lasting impact."
Elaine also expressed her appreciation to JAKOA, FRHAM, the leadership of Kampung Serendah, Taylor's Residence staff, resident volunteers, Taylor's University medical student volunteers and the Orang Asli community for their trust, collaboration and commitment in making LaunchPad a success.
The programme's impact has received both national and international recognition, earning the Times Higher Education Award (2023), the Asia-Pacific Student Accommodation Association (APSAA) Award 2025, and most recently, The ESG Positive Impact Awards 2026, received just days before the conclusion of LaunchPad with the Orang Asli community.
For Taylor's Residence, these accolades reaffirm that student accommodation can be more than a place to live, it can be a platform for developing socially responsible graduates while creating meaningful impact beyond campus.
As LaunchPad concludes another successful chapter, Taylor's Residence remains committed to expanding partnerships, empowering more underserved women and inspiring the next generation of compassionate leaders through service-learning.
